Thrifty Halloween Craft: Owl Plates

Since it's almost October, I am making a few Halloween goodies to mix in with my fall decor.  I don't decorate a lot for Halloween, but in the fall I pretty much lose my faculties and decorate like a mad woman.  So it's easy to put a few things out and enjoy them surrounded by leaves, pumpkins, and rich fall colors.

Black and white are classic, elegant, and don't need a lot of accessorizing.  I found a package of these paper owls a while ago, and hung onto them for future use.  Some like to call this hoarding, I like to think of it as forward-planning.  It's all in the way you look at it.

I used matte Mod Podge and applied it to the back of each owl and attached one to each of the square-ish plates I found at Dollar Tree.  I am on a bit of a Dollar Tree kick lately, every time I stop in, I find more great basics for crafting.  Plus I like things that are a dollar, or less!

I smoothed the bubbles under the paper owl out and applied a light coat of Mod Podge over the entire plate, allowing it to dry well.  I prefer the matte Mod Podge for most of my projects, less glare, and a great smooth finish.

Once my little creepy owls were dry, I had to snap a few shots to share with you.  They may end up on my fantel (in progress) or on either side of a large mirror above my fireplace.  I wondered if I should spray them with glitter spray, or add something.    But I like them like they are, modern, kind of chic, and since it's Halloween, just a little bit spooky.

What do you think? Do you have any plates you could upcycle into a cool project? I would love to hear what you think, and what kind of spooky little goodies you are adding to your nest right now.

Happy creating & as always, thank you for reading

xoxo, Tanya

Love the creepy owls! I think I'm getting the "forward planning" gene, ack, it feels a whole heck of a lot like hoarding!

That's so cute! What a great idea. And you should copyright this quote: "Some like to call this hoarding, I like to think of it as forward-planning." At least it should be a tagline somewhere. Love it!

I love these, they came out so cute and spooky. I like them the way they are, very modern and clean. Also, I'm going to use your 'forward-planning', it sounds so much better than hoarder, lol.

Super cute! And I hear you about forward planning. And when you have six giant boxes of empty, washed out, label-removed, cans, tins, & glass bottles it's called "upcycling". Not "wasting space" as my husband likes to say! :-)

Thanks for sharing at The Fun In Functional!

This looks very cool! I'd love to be able to eat off it though. Do you know any ways to do that without having to put it in a kiln?
